We’ve had over 100 students go through our program at The Hacker Collective, and we had the opportunity to meet a lot of aspiring programmers at the very beginning of their coding journeys. Everyone was once a beginner, when you first started learning programming, you don’t want to waste any of your valuable time.

As a beginner, it’s easy to feel confused with everything. So... how can you make the best decisions and make your learning journey a smooth one?

To all the beginners out there that are overwhelmed with the endless number of coding tutorials, books, or online courses. Here are 7 things that you should know before you start learning how to code. Also, feel free to comment down below if there’s anything that you wish you knew before you embark on this journey!

You learn by doing, not memorizing

Learning to code is a lot like riding a bike and  it’s something you learn by actually doing it. The only way to get better at programming is to actually code. To become a great programmer, you’ll need a ton of practice, try to jump into as many open-source projects and get hands-on learning experiences as you can.

Set up goals

You need a GOAL from DAY 1

Ask yourself this question…

“What do I want to achieve with coding?”

Done? Well there you have it, your answer will be your goal. It’s your main purpose and motivator for learning how to code altogether.

There is no end to learning and improvement in programming. Set up achievable goals for yourself to keep track of your progress.

You don’t need to be a math genius to start

It's a huge advantage if you do, but really to be a good programmer all you need is persistence.

Be Social

Don’t be afraid to just reach out to other programmers for help. Always put yourself out there. Talk to the programmers you admire

Get the basics right

Programming basics will play an important part in your future projects. Pay close attention to it as you first start to learn as you’ll use for your entire coding journey.

Take advantage of code documentation

Code documentations help you learn about the programming language or framework or library you are using, rich with information about that particular topic and can help you learn faster!

Do more projects

Projects can be one of the best ways to learn, they force you to apply the skills while learning them.

I could go all day talking about all the things that you need to know before coding. But truly, the best way to find out what learning to code is really like is to just start coding and see for yourself. The easiest way to get started is to try our program. After doing it ourselves and repeatedly seeing success in our student’s journeys, we now have a proven framework so that you can straight up follow, deploy and monetise asap!
