In this episode of Stories of Hackers, we chatted with Yuu Chin. She had been doing many things from education research, to doing stock trading, to doing website building and coding. We hope you guys will enjoy this interview and learn some interesting insights from her, enjoy!
I would say my background is pretty normal, with a good childhood, growing up nice but I would say I picked up my hustling from my dad because he’s a business guy and he got involved in a lot of startups as well. I learned a lot from him like if you want a result, you have to work really hard.
Right now I am doing a Degree in Multimedia Computing and basically if i have any free time, i would just dedicate myself to two things, one is my programming skills and another one is my forex trading skills.
These are the two major things I'm doing right now. I picked those two up because I just want to find a productive way to spend my free time especially during the MCO (Movement Control Order).
Actually there’s a story that i dont really share with others. I was forced to go into this college that I'm in right now so I wasn't really happy with where I am now and I was depressed and didn't realize the fact that I was depressed. What happened was I was actually offered two scholarships, but then my father wanted me to learn programming so it kind of forced me here whereas the other one is my dream college I've been wanting to go to for a long time. So for a really long time, I was really depressed but at one point ,I just decided that I should just channel my energy somewhere else, so I just distracted myself with all this stuff, with forex trading and programming.
It started off with a book that I found in my house. It's an old japanese book about the history of trading back then. In the ancient time of Japan, there was no currency so japanese traded with rice bags of rice and it really got me interested in trading and i started reading on that and basically the first few months, if not the first year is just a very it's just a side hobby for me where i am reading a lot from the books, the internet.
Eventually I found out that one of my sister's classmates in college was doing forex so I asked him for more information and he started teaching me more on the history of trading and how in today’s modern world, currency trading works. I realised there's a potential in forex but it also depends on your commitment to it, if you commit to it you can really go far with forex. For example, we have to practice every week, we have to do at least 30 trades, chances are there’s going to be someone out there that is doing it and will become better than you.
Definitely want to become a master trader, that's sort of what I'm aiming for, so for those who don't know what a master trader is, it is basically a trader with a system that generates consistent returns over a long period, and he or she will trade with a pool of money from the clients and distribute the profits earn back to them and get a commission from it too.
I would say I like and enjoy learning web and programming but in a way it is also my backup planner in case the forex trading doesn't work out the way I wanted. Even if I want to be a master trader,I can't do that now because I don't have enough capital so I need to find a way to get some capital. It's also good to have some side skills too.
I'm someone who gets anxious when I'm idle so if I don't do anything, I get anxious. I would rather be stressed by a lot of work than having nothing to do.
It's very hard to change someone's mindset and I personally tried that a few times and I would say you can give all the advice but it's ultimately up to them. I actually managed to change one of my friend’s mindset and affect them in a way, so this is the story i told them, imagine yourself at your own funeral. What do you want your family and friends to say about you? How will you be remembered and what impact will you have had on other people’s lives? Did you make the world a better place?
Firstly, the hours count, so whoever tells you that there's a shortcut, they're just lying. For my experience of how i started was, i think it was last year, before the pandemic started, back then my family wanted to set up a dropshipping business so i just took up the challenge and i told them i am going to create the website for it, because the moment you vocalize your plan, you have no choice but to actually commit to it, so that’s how i force myself to start.
The stress was crazy at that time for me. I remember I was at the office for 16 hours a day for a whole month where I started at 7am in the morning and I went home at midnight just to create the website.
If you don't do anything, you're not gonna go anywhere. That's all I could say, you have to do something. Especially since it's been one years in the lockdown, if you don't do something with your life, you're just wasting your time. I would say I learned so much in this one year of lockdown and I know so much more right now compared to last year. You can actually learn and achieve a lot if you really put your effort into it. Every hour counts so when you have any free time, don't waste it, use it to the best and you can make a huge difference in your life.
