You probably hear it often that learning to code is difficult and only suitable for people who are geniuses or good at math.
Or that you should only learn to code if you have some background in computer science or you will fail in learning.
Contrary to popular belief, coding is actually not a difficult skill to learn. However, it does take time, dedication and discipline – just like learning anything new really!
But there is nothing inherently difficult about learning to code.
At Sigma School, we have experienced people from all backgrounds who have no relevant background at all and have successfully learned to code. Check out their success stories.
Although it can feel intimidating and overwhelming by the thought of learning how to code, here are four ways that can help you feel less intimidated to start learning coding:
We know that programming and markup languages have hundreds of commands that you need to learn.
However, you don't need to learn all of them at once to do a certain task or build a project. You only have to use a few basic commands to start building a website or create a simple tool.
Some programming languages also use the same language for numerous basic commands. Which is why understanding the fundamentals and basic commands of a specific programming language is important to help you learn how to code.
Once you are comfortable in writing code, you can then start learning other specific commands to specialize or perform more complex tasks.
Software developers make mistakes everyday when writing code – from accidentally mistyping a word to occasionally missing out a semicolon on one line of code.
We are after all, human and making mistakes helps us learn from them! And a great part about coding is that there are many ways to detect your error.
One of the best parts about coding is that there are many resources and documentation for coders online! Even the professionals need help sometimes because it is impossible to remember every command, function and syntax there is. You can even find sample codes to refer and help you with your own projects.
If you ever feel lonely, intimidated or stuck and need some help – you can always join a community! There are many people out there who are in the same boat as you are. And even the professionals were beginners once too.
You can even find mentors within a community to help and guide you through your coding journey. Even if you are self-learning coding, it does not mean you have to go through it alone!
